Borders of Freie Stadt Danzig

Based on Art. 102 of Treaty of Peace signed 28 June 1919 in Versailles, the Free City of Danzig (Freie Stadt Danzig) was established: "The Principal Allied and Associated Powers undertake to establish the town of Danzig, together with the rest of the territory described in Article 100, as a Free City. It will be placed under the protection of the League of Nations". The treaty, at Art. 100 described the border of Freie Stadt Danzig. The border was divided into sections that got the letters from A to G. Granite landmarks placed on the border had description: "Traite de Versailles / 28 Juin 1919", and a big letters: F.D. from Danzig side, D. from German side and P. from Polish side. The landmarks were numbered with the letter of section and the serial number. To draw the boder Art. 101 of the Peace Treaty established the special commission: "A Commission composed of three members appointed by the Principal Allied and Associated Powers, including a High Commissioner as President, one member appointed by Germany and one member appointed by Poland, shall be constituted within fifteen days of the coming into force of the present Treaty for the purpose of delimiting on the spot the frontier of the territory as described above, taking into account as far as possible the existing communal boundaries".

Section A

From the Baltic Sea (Ostsee) through Kolibki / Steinfließ, Swelina river (Manzelbach), Oliwa forest (Forst Oliva) to the border point Sulmin / Ottomin.

This section was almost 40 km long, there were 206 landmarks numbered from A001 to A206 on it.


Section B

From the borderpoint Niestêpowo / Löblau, between Borcz and Meidahnen to Po³êczyñskie lake (Pollenschiner See).

This section was about 30 km long, there were 180 landmarks from B001 to B180.


Section C

From Po³êczyn (Pollenschin), at the western side of £±kie lake (Lonker See), through the point between Strippau and Szatarpy, to the point between Bo¿e Pole and Postelau.

This section was almost 30 km long, there were 137 landmarks from C001 to C137 on it.


Section D

OFrom the point between Bo¿e Pole and Postelau, through the borderpoint Go³êbiewko / Mittel Golmkau, between Dalwin and Sobbowitz, between Mi³ob±dz and Kohlin, through Tczewskie meadows (Wiesenau) to Vistula river (Weichsel).

This section was more than 30 km long, there were 170 landmarks from D001 to D170.


Section E

From Tczewskie meadows (Wiesenau) along Vistula bed (Weichsel) to Tczewskie bridges, near Liessau and than along Vistula river (Weichsel) to Nogat river.

This section was more than 28 km long, there were only 6 landmarks from E001 to E006, the border was on Vistula river here.


Section F

From the point Pieckel / Weissberg, throuhg Nogat river to Frisches Haff (Zalew Wi¶lany).

The border of this section 58 km long, was on the Nogat river. Only near Wernersdorf it was at the eastern side of the river. Thee were only 24 landmarks here, numbered from F001 to F024.


Section G

From the mouth of Nogat river to Frisches Haff, through Danziger Fahrwasser (fairway) to Frische Nehrung (Penisula Wi¶lana), west of Pröbbernau, through the road Theerbuder Seeweg to Baltic Sea (Ostsee).

This section was almost 20 km long, but only 3 km were on the ground. There were 17 landmarks from G001 to G017 on this part of the border.
